More people should work on Bengali content: DJ Bapon

A banker by profession, this 28-year-old started his own channel, DJ Bapon, on realising that his passion for rock music alone wouldn’t take him anywhere. “I’m on YouTube since 2011. Earlier, I had a band called Roadroller and DJ Bapon became a reality only in 2017,” says Anindya. Elaborating on his thought behind starting DJ Bapon, he says, “As a singer-songwriter, I couldn’t get enough subscribers and even the views were far from enough.I wanted my songs to reach more people. I knew there’s no space for new musicians here. My frustration gave birth to DJ Bapon.”
Anindya, who thinks Bengali content is under threat, ensures DJ Bapon has a quintessential Bengali essence with a musical twist. “You don’t always need a western, posh name and lifestyle to become a DJ. Bapon is a DJ who fits the category of a perfect Bengali guy,” he says. Anindya shares all his new videos with his wife and family before putting it online. He says, “My family used to support my work with Roadroller. But now DJ Bapon has stolen the show. I show them the videos first and seek their approval.”
DJ Bapon is a sensational hit now. After a few of his songs went viral, Anindya started getting offers for live shows but he is in no hurry. “I get calls for stage and live shows. But I don’t want to rush into anything,” he shares. Right now he is busy basking in the love showered upon DJ Bapon. “Thank god I don’t look like DJ Bapon in real life. I don’t wear specs and Punjabi. Still, people recognise me and come up for selfies.”
Anindya thinks more people should work on Bengali content. “We belong to a state that’s culturally very rich. I’m sure there are many YouTubers who still haven’t got very popular. I urge them to come up with fresh Bengali content. We need that on YouTube and there’s a huge audience for it out there,” he adds.
